Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical and genetic disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the vertebral spine. These disorders can diminish general health via obstruction and compromise of the body’s nervous system. Prevention of these disorders and restoration of the body’s innate intelligence is one of the main tenets of chiropractic philosophy. Although chiropractors have many attributes of primary care providers, chiropractic is considered a medical specialty.
The main chiropractic treatment utilizes manual therapy (including manipulation of the spine other joints and soft tissue techniques), therapeutic modalities (ice, heat, cold laser, ultrasound), corrective exercises and health counseling. Traditional chiropractic treats vertebral subluxation/joint dysfunction, in order to treat the body as a whole and allowing one’s body to heal itself naturally.
